Medical Equipment Assistance
Injuries, serious illness, and unexpected medical events can create immediate and complex challenges for firefighters and their families. In certain situations, access to necessary medical equipment can add financial and logistical strain during an already difficult time.
The Los Angeles County Firefighters Welfare Fund may provide assistance to help firefighters obtain essential medical equipment when circumstances warrant support. This assistance is intended to ease burden, support recovery, and allow families to focus on health and care during critical periods.

Financial
Hardship Support
Firefighters may face sudden financial strain due to illness, injury, family emergencies, or other unforeseen life events. During these moments, financial pressure can compound stress and uncertainty for both the firefighter and their loved ones.
Through donor support, the Welfare Fund provides direct assistance to help firefighters navigate periods of unexpected financial hardship. Each request is reviewed individually and handled with discretion, respect, and a clear understanding of the realities of fire service life.
Individual Grants for Long-Term Well-Being
Firefighting places unique and cumulative demands on both physical and mental health over the course of a career. Beyond responding to immediate hardship, the Welfare Fund also supports proactive efforts that promote long-term well-being.
Individual grants may help firefighters access preventative resources such as mental health retreats, medical guidance, and structured behavioral or lifestyle support. These grants are designed to reduce unnecessary stress, encourage early intervention, and help firefighters address challenges before they escalate into more serious health or personal crises.

My wife Alicia and I noticed a flat spot on the back of our son Viggo’s head. Medical guidelines recommend babies sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of SIDS, but because an infant’s skull is soft, prolonged time on the back can sometimes lead to head shape distortion. Viggo needed a corrective helmet, but our insurance would not cover the cost since it wasn’t considered an extreme case. Fortunately, the LA County Firemen’s Benefit and Welfare Association stepped in to help. I didn’t realize B&W could assist with medical expenses not covered by insurance. The process was simple. I contacted my battalion representative, who brought the request to B&W, and I was quickly approved and reimbursed. Viggo received his helmet, and we are incredibly grateful. Special thanks to FF Daoud at FS 193 for guiding us through the process and making it happen.
